Building a Positive, Respectful Community Together 🤝

Silloth-on-Solway Town Council signed the Civility & Respect Pledge back in October 2022, reaffirming our commitment to ensuring that our councillors, town clerk, staff, volunteers, partner organisations, and members of the public are always treated with dignity, civility, and respect.

Good local governance depends on constructive dialogue. While robust discussion and differing views are a healthy part of local democracy, bullying, harassment, and intimidation—whether in person or online—have no place in our town.

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC), alongside the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), has released a video showcasing how parish and town councils across the country are putting civility and respect at the heart of their communities.

Taking the pledge means committing to:

✅ Fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for public meetings and community work.

✅ Maintaining clear governance standards, staff support, and councillor codes of conduct.

✅ Ensuring open, constructive debate where everyone’s voice can be heard respectfully.

We are proud to stand alongside hundreds of local councils across the nation championing positive change in local government.
