Silloth Green in Silloth on Solway raises prestigious Green Flag Award after achieving international quality mark for parks and green spaces
Silloth-on-Solway Town Council is delighted to announce that Silloth Green has once again been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, recognising it as one of the best-managed parks and green spaces in the country.
Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Green Flag Award scheme, the honour marks the 14th consecutive year that Silloth Green has achieved the internationally recognised standard. It is one of only two parks in Cumbria—alongside Castle Park in Penrith—to receive the award in 2026. This accolade is part of a record-breaking 2,391 UK parks and green spaces recognised for their exceptional standards in 2026.
Wendy Jameson, Town Clerk, highlighted the collective effort behind the award:
“Receiving the Green Flag Award for a fourteenth consecutive year is a tremendous achievement and a source of great pride for Silloth. This award reflects the dedication of our staff, councillors, volunteers and community groups who work throughout the year to ensure Silloth Green remains a welcoming, safe and beautiful place for everyone to enjoy. We are delighted that our Green continues to be recognised as one of the very best public spaces in the country”.
One of the largest village greens in the North of England, Silloth Green is a vibrant, welcoming space with spectacular views over the Solway Firth to Criffel and the Caerlaverock Hills, and across to the Lake District. Its unique combination of heritage, modern facilities, and natural beauty has made it a favourite destination for residents and visitors alike.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of attractions including a Water Splash Park, woodland adventure play area, BMX track and Pirate Ship Play Area for younger children.
A 16-station fitness trail stretches from the lifeboat station to the Bee Garden and continues from the picnic area near the tennis courts to beyond the iconic “Big Fella” sculpture, generously gifted to the town by a local resident. The replica Hudson bomber remains a striking focal point, while the Victorian Pagoda, accessible footpaths, heritage-style lighting and picnic areas all add to the Green’s distinctive character.
Community involvement remains central to the success of Silloth Green. The Friends of Silloth Green maintain the popular Community Garden and recently completed fundraising to refurbish its raised beds. The distinctive wooden port sign has also been carefully restored by the Solway Woodcarvers.
Meanwhile, the Bee Garden provides an attractive habitat for bees and butterflies, thanks to the ongoing dedication of local volunteers.
In February, a new historical feature was installed on the Green; a fully restored Pickett-Hamilton fort, adjacent to the Hudson bomber. This is part of the new Silloth Military Trail, developed by the Silloth Airfield Project which also includes information boards and a leaflet.
Silloth Green also serves as the backdrop for a variety of popular events including Green Dayz, Silloth Vintage Rally, Soul on the Green, Emergency Services Day, and the August Carnival, all of which draw visitors from across the region and further afield.
Achieving this award reflects the dedication of everyone involved in caring for Silloth Green. Town councillors volunteer countless hours to guide its future and ensure public funds are invested wisely, while council staff work tirelessly to maintain the Green, play areas, buildings and facilities to the highest possible standard. Their commitment, professionalism and pride are evident throughout the site and have helped make Silloth Green a valued destination for both residents and visitors.
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.
“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.
Silloth-on-Solway Town Council has shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.
